Apple released the iPhone 4 operating software Monday. The software, known as iOS 4, is currently available for download from iTunes 9.2.

Although the iPhone software is available to most current iPhone owners and owners of the most recent iPod Touch, the iPhone 4G won't be released until Thursday.

According to the technology blog Mashable, the free software upgrade is compatible with existing iPhone models including the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models and second and third generation iPod Touches. However, multitasking will only work with the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod Touch.

Mashable also says that one of the biggest advantages to the update is the ability for users to switch quickly between different apps. The update makes also makes multitasking easier for several different applications including Pandora. Gizmodo says Pandora users can now stream music in the background while running other apps.

The release also allows several applications to simultaneously track your location through the iOS 4's background location feature. Users will be able to choose which apps can track the GPS and which can't.

Another new feature of the iOS 4 is the ability for iPhone users to add folders to the home screen, making it a lot easier to stay organized. Groups of applications can now be stored in one place, allowing you to access many apps more easily, which our resident iPhone owners love.

For iPhone users out there who are exhausted of juggling multiple e-mail inboxes, the iOS 4 grants you the ability to create a unified inbox where you can check all of your e-mails in one place.

iBooks are also now available with iOS 4. This allows users to not only use their iPhone as an e-reader, but also purchase books through their mobile device.

One thing to note, a disadvantage of running iOS 4 on older iPhone models is that battery life is drained more quickly, so users will need to adjust their brightness levels and other settings to preserve power.

Many had lots of issues from "missing app to Carrier no available". The AT&T web site forum and Apple's Forum were jammed with people looking for answer to their issues.

After I installed the new iOS 4, my phone didn't have "Internet service" or "Carrier not available" and the error was provoked by a Missing file in the Firmware that wasn't install on my iphone. After I hit "restore" it did install it this time and problem Solved.

The carrier update files are stored in the following locations.

    In Mac OS X:
    /Users/[Username]/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/

    In Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Carrier Support

    In Windows Vista:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Carrier Support\ in Windows Vista.

The version of the carrier settings is visible on iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G by tapping Settings > General > About and looking next to "Carrier". If you restore with a new version of the software, the carrier settings update may be included with that update. If not, iTunes will indicate that a carrier update is available after the restore.
